Many of us live by the mantra “reduce, reuse, recycle.” We know it’s important to maximize the lifecycle of products, but what about natural waste? Of course these items will organically decompose, but artists and ecologists cleverly create environmental art with nature’s garbage. Environmental art is created with natural materials and is designed to be non-destructive or ecologically beneficial—in most cases it is both.
Cultivate is the first annual exhibit featuring the work of eco-artists who draw on urban ecology as subject matter and material to explore environmental concerns in the city. From urban bird habitat to up-purposing green waste, artists explore issues such as the demise of the honeybee and the global mobility of food in a call for change through social and ecological activism.
With a little imagination and some organic litter, you too can create a masterpiece! Come and visit us at the Roundhouse for inspiration and guidance on how to cultivate your urban landscape.
