Event Details

Bharata Natyam is one of India’s cherished classical dance styles. Originally performed in temples by devadasis or servants of god, Bharata Natyam has its roots in prayer. The name ‘bharata’ is an acronym: Bha, Bhava for emotion, Ta, tala for rhythm, and Ra, raga for melody. ‘Natya’ means dance or drama, as in all Indian classical dance forms, a dancer must be an equally proficient actor. The Sunday matinee begins with vocal Carnatic music with Lakshmi Menon and Sayenden Supramaniyam followed by Kiruthika Rathanaswami’s Bharata Natyam. Carnatic music is a form of Indian classical music, developed from ancient Hindu traditions, mainly found in Southern India.
