05janallday27feballdayWindow Gallery: S-LHÉN-ÍT

Event Details

Cedar bark weaving resonates deeply with Jessica Silvey and connects her to her Great Aunts and Great Grandmothers, who were basket weavers, and to her Grandmother, who showed her how to carry herself as a strong First Nations woman. She shows a mixture of cedar bark baskets and mats, and Salish wool weavings. Silvey is a self-taught weaver of Coast Salish and Portuguese descent, from the Silvey Family of Egmont, BC. Beginning by harvesting and preparing her own materials, the entire process of weaving is her passion. s-lhén-ít is the shishalh language word for ‘woven’.
