Message from the President : Spring & Summer 2010
Welcome to our Spring & Summer 2010 program guide!

This season is going to be unlike any other in our history at The Roundhouse, with lots of fun, culture and recreation combined with opportunities to participate in a “once in a life time event.” Accommodating and celebrating the Olympicsat The Roundhouse has meant tuning and retuning our energies and abilities to run with the times and be part of the fun. I am happy to welcome you back to The Roundhouse to create, recreate and reflect.

The Roundhouse was transformed into Casa Italia during the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Our gymnasium became a showcase of Italian delicacies and our historic heritage building welcomed thousands of visitors from around the world. And yet with all the excitement and culture came an interruption to our regular programs and events. I'd like to thank you for enduring many changes and a truncated winter season, and to welcome you to our Spring and Summer programs. I hope you agree: it feels good to be back.

Your Board and staff have worked hard to put the right foot forward and, with Parks Board support, have raised $1.8 million towards making our dreams of developing the Turntable Plaza a reality. Thanks are due to the Parks Board Commissioners and staff, Roundhouse staff and Board members, Federal Government Infrastructure Program, the City of Vancouver and the BC Transmission Corporation. Yes, we have been immensely busy and it feels absolutely good to be where we are!!

With much already underway in 2010, there is still so much left to explore. Bring your family—humans and canines—to Dog Day Afternoon (p.15) May 30th in Cooper's Park for activities, demonstrations and a fun day in the park. A few days later on May 3rd, we're hosting our annual Easter Egg Hunt (p.12) with crafts and chocolate for the whole family.

Interested in introducing and enhancing your children's interest in science? For the second time, we're offering How to Build a Robot (p.28) in which students will learn about, build—and race!—actual robots. For all ages, the Astronomy Workshop (p.46) on April 16th will share access to telescopes along False Creek and offer a new view and information on the moon and planets.

As part of The Roundhouse's commitment to generating new collaborative artworks, Shift: Place, Space & Identity, a middle years art project (p.14) that brings together students in grades 6 to 9 from Elsie Roy, Lord Roberts and King George schools to create works inspired by their neighborhoods. We are extremely proud to foster the students' connections to one another and to their early artistic expression.

Please browse our print or online program and explore the many other events, classes and activities we offer. Our hope is that you'll meet new people, make new friends and much inspiration, within these walls.

Best wishes,
Dr. V. Setty Pendakur
