Wow! I don’t know where to start but by saying that this article is very close and dear to me on many levels. It is a privilege to be able to write this article as an Ismaili Muslim, as a blogger with the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre and just very recently through an unexpected turn of events as a first time artist for this year’s contemporary Ismaili Muslim Art Exhibit.
“Artists are the voice of society,” says Taslim Samji.
Intersections is an annual art show organized by the Ismaili Council for BC in partnership with the Roundhouse. It highlights the work of local Ismaili artists, provides an opportunity for collaboration and is a way for individual artists to step out of their comfort zones. By stepping out of an individual’s comfort zone, magic happens and opportunities are created. As well, bridges are created amongst the contributing artists and within the Ismaili community and between the Ismaili Community, the Roundhouse Community Centre and neighbouring communities and their residents. With all the positive synergy, dreams are created and manifested.
The exhibit will show case the work of 12 Ismaili artists and a few collaborative pieces from a few different artists. You will be treated to a visual feast of contemporary pieces, pottery, sculptures, jewellery and many other items.
Taslim Samji the artist curator (in training) for this year’s art exhibit. She is a passionate and inspiring artist in her professional and personal life. Taslim has always had a love affair with painting. As a young child she found painting very soothing and meditative and often found herself returning to this art form. A few years back, Taslim decided to take painting seriously and enrolled in Emily Carr University, which has not only improved her skills but has also allowed her to give back to the art community by mentoring other up and coming artists and working on collaborative pieces.
I aspire to be as creative and knowledgeable as Taslim. She has been a mentor for me in many ways. If it were not for a conversation I had with Taslim about 2 weeks ago, I would have never have stepped out of my comfort zone and participated in this year’s Intersections – Discovering Infinite Possibilities exhibit.
To feel the excitement, energy, collaboration, passion, and mystery of contemporary art mark your calendars for Nov 24, 2013 between 1-3pm where you can mingle with all of the featured artists at the opening reception. The exhibition will be open for viewing between Nov 24-Dec 1, 2013.
Everyone is welcome so you too can discover the infinite possibilities.
What are some art pieces you would be most interested in viewing? How can you build bridges? What inspires you in life?
