As a dancer, I find myself drawn to all types of dance forms. When dancing, I find that I am in my element and in a place of true bliss. Anyone who knows me well can affirm my passion for the art of dance and can also tell you that mimicking any dance form comes easily and naturally.
I have always been drawn to ballroom dancing and in particular Flamenco dancing for its grace, elegance, bold colours, and its rich music. Flamenco is the coming together of several dance forms and cultures to create a contemporary dance style. While watching a performance you will notice that Flamenco is a combination of tap, belly dancing, salsa, Persian dancing, and Indian classical dancing.
Flamenco is usually performed by a single dancer or by a group to a live guitar orchestra. It is rarely performed in pairs because it is a dance of self-expression that loses its meaning when partnered.
Fiona Malena, a Canadian-born Flamenco dancer who considers Calgary to be home, is passionate about Flamenco Dancing, travelling (professionally and personally), and constantly learning ways to improve her dance technique. Fiona has a special attachment to Spain, having her main ensemble based there. She returns regularly to Calgary to share her experiences with her community and other artists.

Fiona is inspired by life and uses her experiences and observations as themes for her performances. She finds herself drawn to the colours of a peacock and often embraces her audiences with their brilliant blue and green colours. However, on her current tour, Fiona opens with a wider palette to capture the essence of her tour. Puertas means doors in Spanish and this performance portrays the doors found in different countries and cultures through the art of flamenco dancing.
The Roundhouse Community Centre is pleased to present Puertas on Sept 13, 2013. Be sure to grab your tickets early to avoid disappointment.
