My inner nerd squealed with joy when I heard that Roundhouse will be hosting the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival this May 24 & 25. Comics come in all shapes and sizes. There is no discrimination. The comic world is open to all. Some like it as print, some like it as cartoons, and others prefer performance art.
Being a huge fan of the comic web series, I was instantly drawn to the event Bee & Puppycat Go Very Fast! An Afternoon Variety Soiree. On May 24, creators Natasha Allegri et al will craft and read fan-fiction created with the assistance of the audience. Pretty cool!
If you are a budding comic artist, you’ll want to join comic professionals such as Jonathon Dalton, Steve LeCouilliard & Alina Pete for a realistic insight into publishing your work in Pushing Print: Self Publishing Your Comics.
Another exciting event, Out Of The Bag: Comics As Performance Art, bridges comics, theatre, live music and video installation in a unique mix that will rock all of your senses at once.
Carefully crafting humour in comic art isn’t an easy feat. As we all know, trying too hard to be funny often has the opposite effect. Learn to overcome these pitfalls at Comedy In The Comics: How To Be Hilarious. A panel of expert funnyists—Angela Melick (Wasted Talent), Doug Savage (Savage Chickens), Kris Straub (Chainsawsuit) and Ian Boothby (Simpsons and Futurama comics)—will discuss their experiences in writing humour in comics and share experiences to aid you in flexing your comic funny bone.
These are merely a snapshot of the artists and events that will be featured at the Vancouver Comic Arts Festival. Head over to the VanCAF website for a full listing of exhibitors and special guests.
My top tip: be sure to visit Portland illustrator Jeanette Langmead’s exhibit – her paper dolls are amazing… Oh and while you’re there, take a look at her Animal Penis Activity Book. Yes. That’s what I said. Whichever tickles your fancy, you are sure to find an event the suits your style at this free event.
